We can express the same query in SQL as shown in Listing 1-6. It contains three clauses: SELECT specifies which columns to return, FROM specifies the table(s) where the information is kept, and WHERE specifies the conditions the returned rows must satisfy. We ll look at the structure of SQL statements in more detail later, but for now the intention of the query is pretty clear.

between the vendor identifier and the node identifier. If a network interface doesn t have a MAC address, the node ID is randomly generated. Because the IPv6 address includes the MAC address, something important follows: the node in an IPv6 network can determine its own IPv6 address. All that a node must do is listen on the network to check for the address that s in use. Next, it can add its own MAC address, transform that to an IEEE EIA-64 ID, and it ll be able to communicate with the rest of the network automatically. So there goes the need for the DHCP server that was required for automatic address configuration in IPv4 as well. If you really need it, an IPv6 address can work with a subnet mask. By default, this subnet mask for all addresses is /64 (64 bits), which specifies that the first half of the IPv6 address refers to the network, but you can use something other than this default subnet mask as well. However, the last 64 bits of an address are always reserved for the node address, so you can t use them in the subnet mask.

Double-clicking the My Computer/Computer icon gives you access to the PC system. In particular, it lets you browse the file system. The Recycle Bin is the repository of all deleted files. The Start menu provides access to the many computer functions, as well as a list of the programs installed on the system.

Click Places Computer to see all the drives attached to the computer in the file browser window. If you want to browse the file system. double-click File System in the list on the left side of the file browser window. Click the small Trash icon located the bottom-right corner of the Ubuntu desktop. This function is split between the Applications and System menus. The Applications menu provides access to software installed under Ubuntu. The System menu lets you configure and administer the system, similar to the Windows Control Panel. Similar icons are located to the right of the main menus at the top of the Ubuntu desktop. You can add your own entries here by clicking and dragging program icons from the Applications menu or by rightclicking, selecting Add to Panel, and choosing an Application launcher.

Because files are normally organized in directories, it is important that you know how to handle these directories. This involves a few commands: cd: This command changes the current working directory. When using cd, make sure to use the proper syntax. First, names of commands and directories are case sensitive; therefore, /bin is not the same as /BIN. Next, you should be aware that Linux uses a forward slash instead of a backslash for directory paths. So use cd /bin and not cd \bin to change the current directory to /bin.

Located just to the right of the Start button, these small icons let you launch popular programs with a single click.

This icon is used to access network services, usually within a business environment (on newer versions of Windows, this icon is often hidden by default). The My Documents/Documents folder, accessed via its icon on the Windows desktop, is a storage space set aside for a user s documents. The Windows Control Panel, located off the Start menu, enables the user to change system settings and preferences.
