pwd: The pwd command stands for print working directory. Although you can usually see the directory you are currently in from the command-line prompt, sometimes you can t. If this is the case, pwd offers help. mkdir: If you need to create a new directory, use mkdir. With mkdir you can create a complete directory structure in one command as well, which is something you can t do on other operating systems. For example, the command mkdir /some/directory will fail if /some does not already exist. In that case, you can force mkdir to create /some as well: do this by using the mkdir -p /some/directory command. rmdir: The rmdir command is used to remove directories. However, this isn t the most useful command, because it works only on directories that are already empty. If the directory still has files and/or subdirectories in it, use rm -r.

Similar functionality can be found under the System Administration and System Preferences menu options. If you d like a more Windows-esque control panel, press Alt+F2 and type gnome-control-center. This presents a familiar-looking grid of icons from which you can select all of the configuration options for the OS. To find files, click Places Search for Files. You can also add the Deskbar applet to any of your panels (right-click the panel, select Add to Panel, and choose Deskbar from the list). Clicking System Quit brings up a dialog box that is almost identical to the one displayed in Windows XP and offers the same options as the Windows Vista shutdown submenu. The Software Update Notifier checks for software updates and then notifies you when updates are available. Clicking the Update Manager icon pops up a window from which you can download and install updates. In contrast to the Windows system, Ubuntu keeps track of the majority of software installed on your PC and can upgrade almost any application or system file when new versions become available. The User Switcher is located on the left side of the notification area. Click the username or real name, select another user to log in to the system, and supply the correct password. The current user s session is locked, and a new session is activated for the new logged-in user.

These two methods of expressing a simple query are quite straightforward, but as we need to include more and more tables connected in a variety of ways, the diagrammatic interface rapidly becomes unwieldy and the SQL commands more complex. Often, it is easier to think about a query in a more abstract way. With a clear abstract understanding of what is required, it then becomes more straightforward to turn the idea into an appropriate SQL statement. There are two different abstract ways to consider queries on a relational database. Because relational theory was developed by a mathematician, it is couched in quite mathematical terms. The two equivalent ways of thinking about queries are called relational algebra and relational calculus. Do not be alarmed! We will not be getting into quadratic equations or integration I promise. However, these two methods might take a bit of getting used to, so treat the examples in this chapter as just a taster; we will be going over the details in later chapters.

Located on the Start menu, the Find Files/Start Search function lets a user search the file system for missing items. At the bottom of the Start menu within Windows is the Shutdown/ Restart button.

An important task from the command line is managing the files in the directories. Four important commands are used for this purpose: ls lists files. rm removes files. cp copies files. mv moves files.

Located in the system tray, the Windows Update program checks for and downloads software updates, and then notifies you that the updates are ready to be installed at your command.

This option is available when you choose to log off from Windows. You can keep the login session of the current user alive, while allowing another user to log in to Windows.
